Two apps run daily life in Bali: Gojek and Grab. They're the local super-apps — ride-hailing, food delivery, groceries, parcels, all in one — and once you have them set up, getting around and getting fed becomes effortless. If you download nothing else on arrival, download these. Here's how they actually work.

What they do

Rides — car or bikeGoCar / GoRide · GrabCar / GrabBike

Order a car for comfort or a motorbike (bike taxi) to beat traffic and save money. The price is fixed and shown before you book — no haggling, no meter surprises. The bike option is a Bali rite of passage: fast, cheap, helmet provided.

Food deliveryGoFood / GrabFood

Thousands of restaurants and warungs deliver to your door. Browse, order, pay in-app, track the driver. This is how a huge share of Bali eats — including a lot of places that don't do walk-ins.

Everything elseGroceries, parcels, pharmacy

Both apps also do groceries, convenience-store runs, sending parcels across town, even pharmacy. GoSend / GrabExpress will courier almost anything door to door.

Getting set up

  • Download both — coverage and pricing vary, so locals keep both and compare.
  • You'll usually register with a local phone number; a local SIM makes this easy (see our first-48-hours guide).
  • Pay by cash to the driver or top up the in-app wallet (GoPay / GrabPay). Wallet is smoother and often slightly cheaper.
  • Set your pickup pin carefully — GPS can drift on small lanes; drop a note or landmark.
Tip: in a few tourist-heavy zones, local transport "mafias" restrict app pickups — you may be asked to walk to a main road to meet your driver. It's normal; don't argue, just walk out to where the pin can reach.

Gojek or Grab — which?

Honestly, keep both. They're near-identical in function; on any given trip one may be cheaper or have a driver closer. Locals flick between them by price and availability. Grab operates region-wide across Southeast Asia (handy if you travel on); Gojek is the Indonesian original with huge coverage here. There's no wrong choice — having both is the move.

Bike vs car

The bike taxi is cheapest and fastest through traffic — perfect solo, short hops, no luggage. The car is better for groups, luggage, rain, or airport runs. For a sunset dinner out you'll probably want a car; for nipping to the beach, the bike wins. Both come helmeted and tracked in-app.
