Nyepi: the day Bali switches off

Once a year Bali does something no other place on earth does: it switches off. For 24 hours the island goes quiet — no flights, no traffic, no shops, no lights, and nobody leaves their hotel or villa. This is Nyepi, the Balinese new year. If your trip overlaps with it, that isn't an obstacle to route around — but it does need preparing for.

What the day is

Nyepi marks the Balinese Hindu new year on the Saka calendar. It's a day of self-reflection: no work, no travel, no entertainment, no fire or electric light, and for the devout, no eating or speaking. The idea is that by making the island appear utterly dead and dark, any lingering bad spirits pass over Bali and move on. Silence as a spiritual reset for a whole island at once.

Four rules — tourists included

The night before: Ogoh-Ogoh

Nyepi eve is the opposite of silence, and it's a spectacle. Villages spend weeks building Ogoh-Ogoh: giant demon effigies of bamboo and papier-mâché, some several metres tall. The night before, they're paraded through the streets with gamelan, fire and crowds, then symbolically burned to drive the evil out. If you're on the island, go and watch — ask locals where the nearest parade runs.

How to prepare

• Stock up the day before — food, water, snacks. Everything is shut on the day and delivery doesn't run either: Gojek and Grab stay off the road.
• Pick a hotel with grounds you'll enjoy — pool, garden, a view. You'll be in them all day.
• Charge your devices and download something to watch — assume there's no internet.
• Don't fly in or out on Nyepi — check your tickets against the date; the airport is completely closed.
• Draw cash beforehand — ATMs aren't restocked and money changers are shut.

Why it's worth experiencing

Travellers who catch Nyepi almost always describe it the same way: at first it sounds like a lost day, and then it becomes the highlight. A whole island going dark and quiet, no engines, no screens, and at night a sky full of stars you'd never otherwise see over Bali.
