Uluwatu: Temple, Cliffs & Beaches
Uluwatu is Bali at its most dramatic — the southern tip of the island, the Bukit peninsula, where limestone cliffs drop straight into a turquoise sea and world-class waves roll into hidden coves. It's a different Bali from the surf-and-cafe north: higher, wilder, more spectacular. It's about 1.5–2 hours from Canggu, so it's a dedicated day (and evening), not a quick stop. Here's what's worth it.
The temple & the Kecak dance
One of Bali's most important sea temples, perched 70 metres above the ocean on a sheer cliff. Come late afternoon: walk the clifftop path, then stay for the Kecak fire dance at sunset — a chanting, torch-lit performance in an open amphitheatre over the sea. Watch your belongings; the resident monkeys are notorious thieves.
The beaches
A small, beautiful cove reached through a gap in the rocks — famous, so it gets busy, but iconic. Great for a swim between surf sets.
Cliffside warungs and a reef break below — a laid-back favourite, with steep steps down and a great sunset-drink scene up top.
Reached through a cave in the cliff — dramatic and photogenic, the classic Uluwatu surf-and-sunset spot, though small at high tide.
Wider, whiter, calmer beaches for those who want sand and swimming over surf — Melasti has a dramatic cliff-cut road down to it.
Surfing
Uluwatu is a bucket-list surf destination — its reef breaks (Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, Impossibles) are world-famous and mostly for experienced surfers. Beginners are better off on the beach breaks up north around Canggu; here the waves break over shallow reef. Even if you don't surf, watching from a clifftop warung with a cold drink is half the appeal.
How to do it
Give Uluwatu a full day: beaches and a clifftop lunch in the afternoon, the temple and Kecak dance at sunset. It's far enough south that you'll likely have dinner down there too, or start the drive back after dark.
