Russian & Eastern European Comfort Food in Bali: Where to Eat

A few months into island life and you start missing real comfort food — the kind that fills you up and tastes like home. Plenty of places in Bali promise "Russian food," but few actually make it themselves. Here's where to find genuine Slavic and Eastern European cooking, not a watered-down tourist version.

Made in-house, not from a freezer bag

The tell of a real place is that it makes its own. At IZZI Rooftop the pelmeni, vareniki and cheburek are made in the kitchen, not defrosted. Pelmeni come with chicken or beef-and-pork, boiled or fried, with sour cream. Vareniki with potato-onion, cottage cheese, cherry, potato-bacon or suluguni. Borscht, stroganoff and the whole spread

The borscht is traditional — beetroot, tender beef, homemade bread, sour cream, spring onion. Stroganoff runs in five variations. There are cutlets, schnitzel, beef tongue, syrniki with honey, condensed milk or sour cream, and Olivier salad — including the version with Doctor Kolbasa. The kitchen runs until 2:30 AM, so a proper hot meal is on the table late, not just at lunch.

Not just Slavic

Come with a mixed group and nobody's stuck. Beyond the comfort food there's a whole salmon section, pasta, Asian woks, nasi goreng, poke, ramen, soups, breakfasts and house-made ice cream. Everyone finds their plate — rare for a place this specialised.
